Myrio Corporation Pioneers New Digital Television Solution for Carriers

Livingston Telephone Company to Increase Service Area for Digital TV and Other Enhanced Entertainment Offerings with First-Ever Solution

Kirkland, WA - Myrio Corporation, a leading provider of software technology that enables the delivery of Digital TV and advanced entertainment services over broadband networks, announced today that it has co-developed a new solution that facilitates the delivery of IP-based digital television and video services on an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) platform. The development was a collaborative effort with Advanced Fibre Communications®, Inc. (AFC®) (Nasdaq: AFCI) and Riverstone Networks™ (Nasdaq: RSTN). Livingston Telephone, a long-time Myrio customer, is the first independent telephone company in the U.S. to commercially deploy this type of solution.

According to Myrio’s Vice President of Network and Systems Engineering, Ryan Petty, the challenge was finding the right combination of hardware performance and development expertise to perfect the solution.

”Riverstone’s product development team brought with them not only network expertise but also a hardware platform with a solid price-performance profile. With AFC’s access expertise and engineering support at the Livingston site, the three companies developed a solution that they can now take to the rest of the market,” said Petty.

Delivery of digital TV over ADSL networks requires hardware that can provide fast switching between 100 or more IP multicast streams – each stream representing one channel of broadcast or cable TV. Leveraging the Internet Group Multicast Protocol (IGMP), Riverstone’s RS Metro routers forward channels from the video source to AFC’s DMAX™1120 DSL Multi-service Access Platform and perform the group management or channel change functions in the solution.

Myrio’s experience with Multicast Protocol and overall knowledge of network requirements for an end-to-end IPTV solution completed the joint effort. Myrio drafted the product specifications and coordinated trials of the solution, which were conducted in the field and completed within a very short deployment schedule.

“Like Livingston, many independent telephone companies want to deploy video but are being held back by limitations in their installed equipment,” said Curt Walzel, executive vice president and general manager for Livingston Telephone Company. “Because of Myrio’s leadership, design, and its cooperation with AFC and Riverstone, our ability to increase subscriber services is greatly enhanced and provides other independents with new revenue opportunities as well.”

“The nation’s independent telcos continue their leadership in deploying some of the most innovative networks in the country,” said Kevin McClain, vice president of independent operating companies and Canada for AFC. “We are very pleased to have worked with Myrio and Riverstone in providing Livingston’s customer base with television programming over DSL.”

“Riverstone's metro routers are designed specifically to enable carriers like Livingston to increase revenue by offering advanced services to their customers,” said Ed Chang, vice president of product marketing and development at Riverstone Networks. “With deployments like this, Riverstone is continuing to show carriers how they can use their existing networks to make money today.”
